FORTNIGHTLY ROUNDUP

The 68th International Astronautical Congress in 2017.

In 2017 the 68th International Astronautical Congress became Adelaide and South Australia’s largest ever business event. Now the Premier of South Australia, in a joint announcement with the Australian Prime Minister, has unveiled Adelaide as the home of Australia’s new AU$41 million Space Agency. Could this be the largest-ever legacy of a Australian business event?

In issue 50 of Business Events World, read more about the Space Agency in Features, along with a special video case study from Iceberg partner Event – in conjunction with the South Africa National Convention Bureau – about the MBA World Summit 2018 held in Philippi, Cape Town. Also added to Features, Iceberg partner BestCities Global Alliance has staged the third BestCities Global Forum in Bogotá, Colombia. Coventry in the UK has secured a major digital pathology congress, and Glasgow in Scotland has been creating education legacies around three further medical conferences.

Among the older Features, The Iceberg reiterates its call for you to join our Global Ambassador Program. You can also visit Call for Ambassadors 2019 & 2020 to find out more.

In News, The Meetings Show and Iceberg partner Meetings & Incentive Travel have jointly launched a new initiative championing young event planners: Tomorrow’s Talent. Finalists have also been announced for the M&IT Awards 2019, which take place on Friday March 1st at Battersea Evolution in London.

In venue News, the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre has been enlarged by 3,800 square metres to accommodate a single event, iGaming expo SIGMA. The sector accounts for over 12 percent of local GDP. Viparis has announced its first solar tarpaulin, installed on the Paris Nord Villepinte gallery. The Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool marked its tenth birthday at Abbey Road Studios in London, where guests recorded the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” and watched celebrity birthday wishes on video.

In event News, the Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau won its bid to host the International Congress and Conferences on Computational Design and Engineering 2019. Back in Australia, Brisbane won the first foreign annual meeting of the US-based Society for Freshwater Science. Cairns Convention Centre will host the 2021 International Society for Plant Molecular Biology Congress. From Adelaide there’s more on that Space Agency legacy of the 68th International Astronautical Congress.

Two pieces of research are also making news. Over half of meetings industry professionals say they would feel comfortable talking about their mental health at work, claims an M&IT survey. Knowledge transfer is key to successful events, according to new research from the German Convention Bureau.

In Opinions, there’s a third Boardroom and Global Association Hubs Partnership interview addressing association globalisation. Thomas Reiser, Executive Director of the Washington DC-based International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, describes the formation of the European Thrombosis and Haemostasis Alliance in Brussels. Event software company Bizzabo has some new figures on speaker panel gender diversity, plus there’s a review calendar of a turbulent 2018 and analysis of the industry trends we should all watch out for in 2019.

Happy New Year, and until the next time…
