A deadly terror attack and chaotic independence push failed to dent Barcelona’s reputation as a meetings destination in 2017. The Barcelona International Convention Centre hosted 122 events, a nine percent rise and new record. The reopening of major facilities in Sydney has made New South Wales once again most popular Australian destination for professional association conferences, according to Conference Monitor. 389 such events were held there in 2017, up 38 percent on 2016. 325 were held in Victoria and 302 in Queensland, the most popular in 2016. Around 450 US Geological Survey researchers typically attend the annual conference of the American Geophysical Union. But ahead of the recent event the Interior Department said no more than 199 could travel to the meeting, and spending could not exceed $399,000. The new initiative will make up to five awards per year, each of AU$5000, to passionate, talented and capable locally-based professionals or researchers.
