Iceberg partner European Cities Marketing has just staged its International Conference and General Assembly in Hamburg, rebranding during the event as the City Destinations Alliance. Visit Flanders and #Meet4impact presented a legacy collaboration there, and the latter’s Geneviève Leclerc now explains how the SDGs make a great framework around which to anchor the legacy of association meetings.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the seventeen interconnected global targets designed to create a better and more sustainable future, are increasingly becoming a guide around which to shape legacy creation for business events.

At the recent Hamburg International Conference of Iceberg partner European Cities Marketing, now rebranded the City Destinations Alliance, Visit Flanders and #Meet4impact described their joint new methodology for developing and measuring legacy. Iceberg partner #Meet4impact’s Geneviève Leclerc, herself an Iceberg ambassador, also spoke on camera to James Latham about how the SDGs can be used to frame approaches to building legacy into association meetings.

In this wide-ranging interview, Geneviève discusses the role the SDGs are now playing in the sector. Her case studies include AIDS 2022 in Montreal, taking place from July 29th to August 2nd, which is aiming to address multiple SDGs in its outreach work. Visit Flanders’ Gemmeke De Jongh then takes us through the above-mentioned legacy project. One of its meetings discussed is the 2023 Hands On! conference in Mechelen, which aims to involve children with museums. We also hear about ESTRO, the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, whose legacy project at its 2021 Madrid Annual Congress is also explained by David Novack of the Madrid Convention Bureau.

In each case the precise SDGs being addressed by each association meeting are outlined. It is often not only the ones you might think!
