UNBROKEN: Ukraine Calls Associations to Action

The Humanitarian: Andriy Sadovyi, Mayor of Lviv, Ukraine

“11 years ago Lviv hosted the European Football Championships. Today Lviv is a huge humanitarian hub. 5 million internally displaced people [have] passed through Lviv. Today Lviv hosts over 150,000 IDPs and every day we host wounded – civilian wounded, women, children and Ukrainian soldiers. Our municipal hospital [has] hosted 30,000 wounded…,” said Andriy Sadovyi, the Mayor of Lviv, during a recent visit to the city by The Iceberg.

UNBROKEN provides an open goal for medical and humanitarian organisations to provide support

Lviv is in immediate need of expertise, equipment, training, and funding to expand its surgical and rehabilitative capacity at the UNBROKEN Rehabilitation Centre – the legacy project of the International Rehabilitation Forum held in Lviv at the outbreak of the war waged by Russia.

The UNBROKEN Project represents an opportunity for international organisations to focus on a solution to the medical infrastructure, patient care, and social challenges faced by Lviv which is scalable – when safe enough – to extend to Kyiv, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Odessa, and other Ukrainian cities closer to the Southern and Eastern fronts. Meanwhile, UNBROKEN in Lviv will require additional resources in medical, social and life sciences, physiotherapies, psychotherapies, sporting and cultural rehabilitation, construction, engineering, training, and education.

The Iceberg is joining the UNBROKEN Charity Foundation executive director, Oleksandr Kobzarev, in a call to join a ‘scouting mission’ to Lviv for an UNBROKEN Emergency Summit, 29-31st October, or to arrange individual missions through the Lviv Convention Bureau. “Bring your scouts, have them back, create plans of recovery in Ukraine and make your contribution. It can be expertise, it can be equipment, it can be funds because we have a lot of different needs and we have this severe humanitarian problem in Ukraine because of war,” he said.

This is a defining moment for all sectors – represented by trade bodies, professional associations, societies, foundations, NGOs, other non-profits, and corporations – whose missions align to the needs of UNBROKEN and Ukraine both today and post-war.

Prepare for Victory: Event Planners Also Invited

As the #UrbanForum held in July demonstrated, it is possible to deliver immediate or longer-tail impacts and legacies through the mobilisation of business & professional communities using events. In preparation for victory, the invitation to the return mission or individual site visits, extends to board members, trustees, or volunteers and planners responsible for placing international congresses and conventions post-war.

Our thanks to the City of Lviv, the Lviv Bureau for European Integration, the Lviv Convention Bureau, the Mayor’s Office, and the Leopolis Hotel for hosting The Iceberg. Thanks also to the partners of The Iceberg for sending their messages to the Mayor and/or President of Ukraine which can be viewed here.

Special thanks also to Olena Pavlyuk and Yuliia Katynska from the Lviv Convention Bureau. Thanks also Ian Fothergill of the Medical Center for Orthotics and Prosthetics for sharing one of the challenges faced, in his case through the prism of Prosthetics & Orthotics.
