IMEX Policy Forum 2025 Report – Business Events as Catalysts for Place Leadership

Essential reading for destination leaders interested in building stronger relationships with national or city policymakers:

120 Business Events association and destination marketing leaders and 20 policymakers (a mix of ministers and MPs, mayors and councillors, senior civil servants and advisors) met during IMEX in Frankfurt to discuss the practical steps our sector could take to earn a permanent seat at the “top table” of destination leadership teams, at both city and national level. This report provides a high-level overview of the issues raised and the wide range of proposed solutions and innovative strategic approaches.

“It’s not about selling the idea of business events – it’s about selling outcomes: more investment, more innovation, better infrastructure, and stronger communities” (Prof Greg Clark, keynote speaker). Learning to speak the same language as policymakers, creatively linking Business Events issues to policymaking priorities, and being seen as a source of time-saving solutions are all critical issues, as more and more destinations adopt “distributed leadership” models.
