FORTNIGHTLY ROUNDUP

“Incredible Impacts” 2018 winners at the ICCA Congress in Dubai.

The Iceberg‘s friends and partners the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and BestCities Global Alliance are once again seeking amazing examples of association meeting legacies to award in the third running of their “Incredible Impacts”. Apply here.

Added to Features this issue of Business Events World and on The Iceberg are three great articles about legacy creation. There’s a roundup of former Rust Belt US cities reinventing themselves as knowledge hubs. A recent trip to Guadalajara, life sciences hub of Latin America, included The Iceberg, partner Boardroom and the Executive Director of the World Federation of Public Health Associations. We also examine business events legacy in South Africa, and the wider continent, with SA Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom (just as the county’s general election results are tallied!). The video feature discusses as well specific legacies following the 2013 World Congress in Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.

In News you’ll find three articles on the grim terror attacks that may have destroyed a decade of tourism-driven economic recovery in Sri Lanka. Local destination management companies (DMCs) have been deluged with cancellations. An international conference on endangered animals and plants has been postponed. ICCA hotel members were among those targeted, according to the association’s new Sri Lankan-born CEO, Senthil Gopinath.

In event News, 400 participants have just gathered in Madrid for the World Hospital at Home Congress, the first of its kind. Said the event co-chair, “…with this congress, we became a tribe”. Maputo is getting ready to host the new Mozambique Ports and Rail Evolution Forum 2019, alongside upcoming investment in the local sector. London’s ExCel has won the International Liver Congress 2020, Oman has secured the International Radiology Congress, also for next year, and Hamburg will be hosting a 2022 conference on hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid disorders.

In industry News, Omnipress has published its fifth State of the Conference Industry Report. Iceberg partner UFI, the exhibition industry’s global association, has for the first time calculated the total global economic impact of exhibitions. It’s equal to the 56th largest economy in the world! In venue News, the Palais des congrès de Montréal is joining the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Organisers have unveiled a sneak peek of the Dubai Exhibition Centre, set to host the six-month-long World Expo 2020 from October next year.

There’s still more on The Iceberg itself (click View all News). ACC Liverpool has confirmed a series of conferences returning to the venue after signing multi-year deals. The regional GSMA Mobile 360 Series – Eurasia conference gets a second running back in Moscow later this year. Finally, the Greek capital Athens is targeting international conventions with “know-how and financial resources”.

In Opinions, a global initiative to address the use of plastic at events has been launched by Iceberg partner Positive Impact supported by the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Two association chiefs are talking legacy creation: Tracy Bury of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, and Jack Sim of the World Toilet Organisation, the global voice of the sanitation agenda. Association meetings go head-to-head against those created by professional conference organisers. The fight gets tribal!

Also in Opinions, learn how to advocate for convention centre expansion, and about the inaugural Society of Incentive Travel Excellence’s SITE Incentive Summit Europe in Verbier. After the recent terror attacks in Sri Lanka, a local DMC pleads with the international community not to abandon the destination. Finally, Lyn Lewis-Smith of Business Events Sydney has been gathering intelligence on the talent attraction strategies of US multinationals. Are global meeting delegates an opportunity currently being overlooked?

In Research you’ll find Omnipress’ fifth State of the Conference Industry Report, also referenced above, just added.

Finally, and as always, The Iceberg reiterates its call for you to join our Global Ambassador Program. You can see Ambassadors listed on The Iceberg homepage, Ambassadors page, and in Business Events World below. Visit Call for Ambassadors 2019 & 2020 to find out more.

Until the next time…
