FORTNIGHTLY ROUNDUP

Compliments of the season from The Iceberg and Business Events World.

In issue 49 of Business Events World, The Iceberg reiterates its call for you to join our Global Ambassador Program. In Features below, or here: Call for Ambassadors 2019 & 2020, you can find out how to participate. Some significant industry names have already done just that. Also in Features, read how the All Together Better Health conference is coming to Qatar, how the EANS neurosurgery congress is heading to Hamburg, and also all about Gothenburg’s sustainability-driven meetings strategy.

In News you’ll find the UK Meetings Show’s advisory board discussing the future of the event and wider sector. Iceberg partner Meeting Professionals International has released its latest Meetings Outlook report, and IACC the first APAC edition of its “Meeting Room of the Future”. Congress Center Basel is once again preparing to host a series of major international events. The new Toulouse Exhibition and Convention Centre is under construction. Wellington’s Conference and Exhibition Centre project has been given a green light by the City Council.

Iceberg partners the International Congress and Convention Association and the American Society of Association Executives have collaborated on ASAE’s Asia Pacific Association Leadership Forum. For the first time ever, South Africa will host ICCA’s Association Meetings Programme in June 2019. Brisbane’s convention bureau is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Quebec City and Laval University will host a major meeting on using insects as food. The grub(s) will surely be great!

Also in News this issue, event management student Ebony Banks is the winner of the 2018 Vanessa Cotton Scholarship Award organised by the MPI UK and Ireland chapter. Another Iceberg partner, the International Association of Professional Congress Organisers, which is also meeting at Congress Center Basel next year, has appointed Martin Boyle, Director of Europe for convention bureau BESydney, as its new CEO.

There’s still more on The Iceberg itself (click View all News). Lausanne has joined the Energy Cities Alliance, a marketing consortium of business events destinations. The Design History Conference is heading to Newcastle in 2019. The British Small Animal Veterinary Association, organiser of the largest and oldest sector congress in Europe, is moving its event to Manchester from 2021. I’ve actually attended this meeting in the past, despite being neither a vet nor a small animal.

In Opinions there’s the second Boardroom and Global Association Hubs Partnership interview addressing association globalisation. David Macadam is CEO of the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres. There’s also a profile of GAHP and its four member destinations. Kai Hattendorf, CEO and MD of the exhibition industry’s global association UFI, lays out five industry trends to watch in 2019. The President of the Association for Women in Events Kiki J Fox discusses diversity and inclusion. Steff Berger, Managing Director of VOBE – Inspires People, shares expertise in counterterrorism and the threat of cyberattack.

SoolNua’s Pádraic Gilligan, also Chief Marketing Officer of Iceberg partner the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence, offers a thought-provoking report from the recent SITE Executive Summit in Rwanda. SoolNua’s Mary Martin rounds up IBTM World in Barcelona. Heather Seasholtz, Director of Meetings and Events at yet another Iceberg partner, the Talley Management Group, shares a personal perspective on the industry. Finally, there’s a fascinating PCMA view on how US trade tariffs are affecting events in the seafood and toy sectors.

With the compliments of the season, and until the next time next year…

Robert Coren, Curator of The Iceberg
