Geneva: Sibos 2016 and Aligning with Knowledge Sectors

Why Sibos and Geneva were the perfect match…

The Geneva Convention Bureau has recently restructured its marketing communications and resources in order to align its bids to the city’s growth agenda.

It has taken nearly two years to develop the organisational knowledge of – and relations within – the key clusters of industry identified by the Economic Development Office (EDO).

However Director of the Geneva CVB Anja Loetscher says “it has been the best decision we ever did”.

Sibos – the annual congress of banking and finance co-operative SWIFT – was held recently in Geneva, Switzerland. According to Sibos MD Sven Bossu the reason the organisation selected the venue is because Geneva is first and foremost a global source of knowledge and expertise in banking, financial services, and financial technology (FinTech). Secondary considerations were whether the destination ticked the practical boxes associated with hosting an event of Sibos’ size and prestige.

In seeking legacies from the event both parties shared a common purpose: the organiser in relation to its mission to advance the cause of its members, and the destination in driving start-ups and employment in the cluster.

The Iceberg asked Bossu to expand on the motivations supporting the success of the 2015 event.

Access to local knowledge is vital.

The realignment of the convention bureau activities to the EDO agenda is clearly a blueprint for best practise. To illustrate the changing nature of communications – from hardware to software, from infrastructure to expertise – Intellectual Capitals caught up with Geneva`s intellectual capital to reveal the city`s expertise and opportunities for similarly minded organisers of association meetings.
